A solid choice |
In my estimation, the people most likely to use this backpack are urban warriors or college students. It seems to be pretty well designed. I like the fact that there are options to compartmentalize some of your gear without losing track of it. Some tech backpacks have way too many pockets. This one seems to hit on a sweet spot. Two large compartments and three smaller sections allow you to separate laptop and power cord from ipod and thumb drive.
The bag is nicely padded and waterproof, both key components when stowing your valuable electronics. I also really appreciated the reinforced grab handle at the top of the bag. Its perfect for fishing your gear out of the back seat or from underneath a desk. This Targus bag is well built. Both the straps and the zippers seemed to be constructed in such a way that they would take a bit of punishment, a key factor in the long haul. The rubberized bottom should also go a long way in keeping the bag from skidding around too much when sitting upright.
My two big gripes are somewhat minor. I wasn't knocked out about the 'quilted' look on the back of the backpack. I understand the need for padding, but it just wasn't the most aesthetically pleasing choice in my humble opinion. I also wish that there had been more accommodations for small electronics. I like the bags that have a small pass-thru for earbuds so that you can listen to music while keeping your music player of chose safely stowed in the bag. It might have also been nice to have a cell phone holster readily accessible on the shoulder strap. Again, minor stuff - but it did keep me from bestowing that final star on this review.

Utilitarian like a winter coat |

This is being used by a college freshman on a campus in the Mid-South where it rains a lot, so the waterproof aspect is good. It is VERY light in weight, which is excellent, but insulated enough to protect the electronics. As to capacity, he was able to take it back to school containing a standard memory-foam bed-pillow, zipped completely. However it did not contain the 15" laptop at that time--but it does seem adequate to hold the laptop and a day's school materials, too. |

Comfortable, Well-Designed Backpack |

In the world of computer carrying cases/backpacks, the offerings range from the simple (one padded slot) to the overly complex (35 compartments/subcompartments, straps, zippers and velcro) where you could lose an accessory for months before re-finding it. Targus has carved out a very happy medium and added water resistant fabric and made it very comfortable to carry to boot. There are 2 main zippered compartments, a large rear one which can accommodate up to 16 inch laptops, and a segmented compartment which includes a mesh section, 4 sizes of simple pockets, and a padded pocket for say a mouse. On both sides at the bottom their is small zippered compartment, and there is a zippered compartment the size of a paperback book on the back. So, if you are looking for a backpack to carry a computer, ipod, ipad, a few accessories and provide protection against life's insults, this is for you. |

An excellent design |
The Targus 16inch Crave Laptop Backpack looks great and after placing our laptop in it and taking it to work we realize it is well protected.
The material is excellent, well padded inside, made of weather resistant components that protect one of our most valuable assets.
The backpack's design includes mesh fabric to provide ventilation and comfortable padded shoulder straps. There are pockets for conveniently carrying other items.
We recommend this item highly for anyone needing to travel with a laptop.

Solid backpack for computer use |
Great backpack for computer use. Nice size for up to a 16 inch laptop. The bag is well padded although I recommend begin careful with new laptops that have a thinner screen. It could be damaged by lack of padding and while this bag is padded I question whether it is sufficient to protect the thinner screens.
Otherwise this is a nice case with enough room for storage of extras and power cords. Room for documents or other items that one needs to carry to a meeting or other location is limited, however.
Regardless of these limits I still like this pack and prefer it to the standard laptop cases. |
